Photo Tip: Pictures in the snow

anytime-artanytime-art2So you spend the time to pack the car, find snow gear in the right size for each one of your children, and you plan a trip up to the snow. It is only an hour drive, but it takes you three hours to get from point a (your house) to point b (the snow). You have invested some time in this trip, and you would love a great picture that will remind you of this effort, and the fun you had. So here are a few Anytime Art tips for you.

1. The snow is white and bright. This can be a huge problem in a few ways. You might have too much light coming into your camera, so in compensation, your camera may underexpose the subject. (so you get dark faces) How can you fix this? The two easiest ways to fix this is to either use your flash and fill in the faces of your subjects, or to change your compensation to +. Look at your settings on your camera for how to do it.

2. Snow play is usually a quick moving, action packed time, so it can help to have a quick shutter speed. If you don’t know how to change the shutter speed, look for the action mode on your camera.

Hope this helps, and that you find time to play in the beautiful local snow.

PS- Although our February workshop was sold out, contact us to be the first to hear about our next class.

February Workshop Sold Out!

Thank you to everyone who signed up! We are very excited and can’t wait to meet you in person.  Please email us if you want to be the the first to find out about our next workshop.

We’ve been sooo bad about our Tuesday Tips, so here’s a random tip just for fun.  If you have a child who puts on their stinky attitude every time they see your camera, try to have an older sibling/cousin/friend help out by tickling the little one and running away. The older child feels really good about being the helper and the little one is sure to give you a cute smile. Well, sometimes…. if they are REALLY determined to be a stinker, it may not work, but you still turn out with something cute like this:

So many good models out there!

We’ve been flooded with emails since the last post and we can’t possibly choose, specially because I know a few of the kids and they are wonderfully adorable.  So we’ll put all the names in a bowl and pick 2 randomly. We’ll announce the winner by the end of the week.  Thank you so much for your interest everyone!!

Models Wanted!!!

Noel and I (Mali) are very proud of our abilities to make ANY child cooperate during a photo shoot - at least cooperate enough for the pictures to turn out great! :) But right now we are looking for children who will do this:

and this

and this

happily and cooperatively.  We are looking for kids ages 3 to 7 years who would have fun and enjoy bring in front of the camera.  We ask for kids who are natural “people pleasers” because Noel and I will be focused on teaching our attendees and will not play and be silly as we normally would in a photo shoot.  We also ask that the parent stays for the duration of the shoot.

In return, we’ll give you a CD with the images from the day, as well as an 8×10 print of your favorite shot.

If this sounds interesting to you, please leave a comment here or email mali@maliworkman.com to let us know!

Tuesday Tip - Holiday Card

OK, this post is a week late, but today is Tuesday, so I guess I’m OK :)

Every year since my kids were born I take a picture of them in their Christmas outfits and send it as a Holiday Card.  For the first 3 years I got to do what I wanted, but for the past few years THEY are the ones who tell me where and how they want their picture.  The actual “Christmas Photo Shoot” as we call it, has become a family tradition and we all look forward to it.  Once we choose and buy their Christmas clothes, it’s just a matter of having the kids agree on a location.  Kaylie pretty much gets to choose every time because she can easily persuade Derek who is 2 years younger, but when it comes time for the actual shoot she knows she needs to listen to him or he will NOT cooperate :).  This year they wanted to be dancing on the picture, and since Kaylie just lost her front tooth, that had to be in the card too. So here it is:

Let’s talk Holiday card!

We are all thinking it. And if you aren’t thinking it, most likely you are one of those planners that has already checked it off your list, and are on to other holiday tasks. The Holiday card. Yes, it tends to stress me out every year. Mostly because it says something about me, my family,  in some cases it is my last shred of communication between me and friends of years past. I want it to be creative, fun, cute, and yes for the record, that is a lot of pressure on myself.

So here is my Tuesday tip: decide on a concept, and not a picture.

Find a tradition, or a theme, and use that to portray your creativity, and don’t worry about finding that perfect photo. I keep a file of old cards that I like, and last years idea came from one in that file. A coworker of my husband had a great card five years ago, and that seemed like enough time for them to forget they sent us one if they saw mine. So I used images throughout the year and came up with my version. Here it is for those of you not on my ridiculously long list.

frontwebinside-spreaduswebIn case you were wondering, I did not go out in the rain for this last picture. I thank my neighbor Tad for his talent with the garden hose, and for not getting one single drop on my camera. Thanks tad. Oh, and thank you to the neighbor kids making cj laugh. That made the card for sure.

Tuesday Tip - Shoot from above!

I’m sorry we skipped a couple of Tuesdays…. this time of the year is completely insane around here.  So today we have a very quick and simple tip that can be very helpful. We’ve talked about unusual angles before, but this one is very flattering when photographing women.  Shoot from above!

OC Family Magazine

If you know me you probably already know I really dislike fast food restaurants and very rarely go to one (maybe In n Out a couple of times a year, but that’s all!). But I do LOVE Wahoo’s! And yes, we go there more than we should :) But I’m happy to say that we now have 2 choices for something quick and healthy enough that doesn’t make me feel guilty :)  Today we tried the new restaurant in the Aliso Viejo Town Center, Sandella’s.  Now we have 2 favorites and they are both right next to Golden Spoon…Perfect!

After we ate lunch, I picked up the OC Family Magazine because I love to read Suz Broughton’s articles. Suz is funny and clever, and anything she writes is fun to read.  And this month’s issue is especially awesome, because it features Jackie Culmer’s picture.  Shortly after Jackie came to our Anytime-art Workshop, she entered a picture of her daughter and WON! Way to go Jackie! Soooo Cool!
